The life expectancy of Russians has been declining in rapid numbers. Among all industrialized nations, Russia's public health has worsened, rather than it being improved. "Consequently, both Russian men and women had a lower life expectancy in 1994 than their Soviet counterparts in 1960, and since the breakup of the former Soviet Union, mortality for both sexes has increased"(Cockerham).
In Russia, money give people power over others, which is a big reason we have seen such an increase in the number of murders taking place in Russia. Drug trafficking and illicit drug use is a significant trend in the country and there isn't much done about it. This chart shows the increases and decreases in life expectancy in the Russian Federation and the Former Soviet Union. As far as gender goes, there is a rise in female deaths and this can be directly related to crimes occurring in Russia. It doesn't surprise me that Russia has the highest rates of murders because under the previous Soviet Union, over half of Russia's economy was run on crimes. Women have a higher death rate because of global sex trafficking, their unemployment rate, and maternal mortality. Women who end their pregnancies usually suffer horrible consequences, leading to murder in some cases.
